Li-ion lithium ion battery charger ic, switch mode (X4)

Switch-Mode Lithium-Ion battery charge controller.
High efficiency circuit with few external components.
Resistor programmable charge currents
Pins for status LEDs indicate charge state.
Build a battery charger for Li-Ion batteries (which cannot be charged with conventional chargers or power supplies).
Li-Ion batteries offer many advantages:
Highest power density per volume and per weight of any battery chemistry on the market;
Practical and space-efficient rectangular shapes;
Deliver maximun capacity without burn-in and retain maxinum capacity over their lifetime;
Not prone to leaking and corrosion;
Not prone to capacity reduction when not fully discharged (no "memory effect")
However the Lithium Ion chemistry requires specific and complex charging voltage/current profiles, which cannot be accomplished with constsnt-voltage or constsnt-current sources alone. The links below explain some of the peculiarities of charging Li-Ion cells.
Li-Ion and other types of batteries
Sample circit on Page 7 of Datasheet. Note that the inductor in the schematic is erroneously specified at 150mH -it should read 150uH (microHenries)
The UCC3956 enables you to use or re-use any Li-Ion cell from cell phone or laptop equipment and charge it correctly, without having the original AC adaptor which "talks" to the battery.
