The NE556 / LM556 is the world's most popular universal dual timer IC. It's the equivalent of two independent '555 timers in a single DIP-14 package. This compact, simple circuit design has inspired tons of application literature. Check the excellent AN170 and other links below, or do your own Google search for literally thousands of circuit ideas.
Circuits based on the universal '555 single timer can be applied directly to each half of the '556 dual timer, noting the obvious pin-out differences.
