The Stretta System, manufactured by Curon Medical Inc. provides physicians with the tools to perform a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This procedure provides a less invasive alternative to anti-reflux surgery for those patients with inadequate GERD symptom control on drug therapy.
The Stretta System consists of the Stretta Catheter, which is a single-use flexible device with needle electrodes, and the Curon Control Module. Using these devices, the physician delivers temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to create thermal lesions in the muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and gastric cardia.
The Stretta Procedure typically is performed by general surgeons and gastroenterologists in an endoscopy unit or ambulatory surgery unit with the patient under conscious sedation. The Stretta Catheter is positioned at the junction of the esophagus and stomach (GE junction). A balloon is inflated and needle electrodes are deployed from a basket surrounding the balloon into the tissue. Temperature-controlled radiofrequency (RF) energy is delivered from the control module through the electrodes to create thermal lesions n the muscle of the GE junction. Several prospective peer reviewed published studies have reported improvement in GERD symptom scores, patient quality of life, esophageal acid exposure, and anti-secretory medication use after the Stretta Procedure.
