GI or 1I (military) means germanium diodes
AI or 3I (military) means arsenide-gallium diodes
The 1st figure after letter "I" in the name of diodes means the type of diode:
4 - Backward diode ( Tunnel back, Unitunnel diode )
These diodes can be used for other purposes but aforesaid using is preferrable.
