This is a brand new sealed Refrigerant Sight Glass Assembly for the Bunn CDS-3 machine.
The replacement of this part requires the evacuation and refilling of the refrigerant (Freon) in your machine and must be done by an EPA-certified refrigeration technician.
This component allows you to look through a glass window and ascertain the condition of the refrigerant in your system by direct visualization. If you're old enough you may remember a similar small round glass window in your car's air conditioning system. When the compressor is running, if you see bubbles, you knew your refrigerant level was low and you popped in a can of Freon. With the advent of environmental regulations and the elimination of citizen-replacement of Freon and requirements for lots of high tech equipment to evaluate, repair, evacuate and recharge refrigeration systems, newer system have eliminated this neat little device. While there are no moving parts, this component can develop a leak over time and would have to be replaced. Finding this leak would require a trained technician using a "halogen sniffer" - a tool that helps locate "Freon" leaks.
