This is a brand new factory sealed refrigerant Solenoid Valve for the Bunn CDS-3 machine.
Your CDS-3 machine uses one refrigeration system to independently cool three different hoppers. It does this by routing the refrigerant to each hopper's evaporator (cooling tube) using one of these electrically-operated refrigerant valves. Depending on the control system's orders (determined by the product temperature and thickness and your product thickness setting via the dial in the conttrol drawer), an electrical signal is sent to this valve to open or close. When the hopper needs to be colder, electricity is sent to the valve, it opens, and refrigerant pumped by the compressor flows into the cooling tubes to freeze the product. When the desired thickness and temperature are achieved, the electrical signal is turned off and the valve closes. By using this concept and a separate valve for each hopper, the hoppers can be independently controlled for just the right product consistency while requiring only one refrigeration system.
The replacement of this part requires the evacuation and refilling of the refrigerant (Freon) in your system, and must be accomplished by an EPA-certified refrigeration technician.
