Your hydraulic system has a limited amount of power from the engine/electric motor. This power is divided between pressure and flow- more flow needed means less pressure available and vice versa. A 2 stage pump will switch between either high flow/low pressure (faster operation) or high pressure/low flow (more powerful splitting/pressing etc) but stay within limits of power available from the engine/motor.
These pumps feature an internal unloading valve that diverts high-volume flow at 700psi when higher pressure is required.The unloading feature means that a smaller, efficient engine can be utilised effectively.
The high flow stage is in operation when your cylinder is under low pressure (i.e extending/retracting with no load on it). When the cylinder reaches a load (e.g a log to be split) the unloading valve diverts part of the flow meaning higher pressure can be used without need for more power.
Optimum engine size required- 4.5hp
6.3cc/rev 2.1cc/rev displacements (e.g delivering 23 litres/min @ 2800rpm, 30 litres/min @ 3600rpm)
High to low flow unloading valve operates at 700psi (48bar)
