THERE S DAYLIGHT IN THE SWAMPS
This is the first of two books Mert has written concerning the early days of logging. There is a wealth of photos contained within the text.
This book describes what it was like to enter the dense pine forests which once covered the Northern States of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.
Readers are introduced to the loggers who took part in those early logging operations, the methods they used, the camp life they were part of, how they spent their time at the end of a hard day of work, and how they occuppied their time during their one day off every week.
Three-fourths of the book is concentrated on the early logging days, while one-fourth of the book revolves around deer hunts which took place during this same period of time. Strange as it may seem, the two went hand in hand.
In the mature forests prior to logging there was little if any underbrush which meant there was little food or shelter for the deer to survive. Once logging began, all of that changed.
In the clear-cuts where once stood a forest so dense and thick and where the sun never reached the Earth, a nursery came into being for millions upon millions of tiny poplar, birch, oaks, and maples which grew at an unbelievable rate. Once established, these stands of trees provided the food and cover the deer had longed for and like the trees, the deer multiplied by the thousands and with the deer, the hunters came.
Hundreds of photos help to illustrate all that was taking place during this time.
