In the process of liquidating my father's workshop, we've unearthed hundreds of small, vintage, precise measurement tools that he used from the 1930s through the 1960s when he was a tool and die maker. This was in the era of pre-laser measurements, and of course, pre-C.A.D, not even considering it was in the computer dark ages. He retired into faceting and lapidary and used all these tools, especially in faceting.
This particular tool is a foot and inch measurement wheel that is 4" in size. You run the wheel across the surface and it advances the arm to measure inches and/or feet (move to the left and the hands move to the right, move to the right and the hands move to the left).
It was made in Switzerland by the Charles Bruning Company which was a division of Addressograph Multigraph Corporation. Charles Bruning is recognized for making the most accurate measuring instruments in the world. This dates back to somewhere between the 1930s and 1950s.
The back of this says Charles Bruning Company, NY, Swiss. The front face says "Switzerland".
It has minor wear on places on the plating. This does not affect how well this wheel works. The back of the tool may look like it's black, just because I had to angle the shot so you could see the text, but it's not. The back is the metal color you see on the front.
I have tested this wheel for accuracy running it across rulers, maps and yardsticks and couldn't believe how well (and accurately) this works.
Vintage items are pre-owned and will come with the normal signs of use and wear commensurate with age, and as such will not be 'as new' unless specifically described. However, I do my best to describe all items accurately with details of any flaws. I do not try to mislead and will be happy to answer any questions for further information.
