The Abbe Refractometer is a very common and convenient method to identify or confirm liquid composition, determine or monitor the purity of samples, or monitor the concentration of various materials in solution.
The refractive index of a material can be measured very precisely to 4 decimal places; usually from about 1.3000 to about 1.7000. Refractive index of liquids is analogous to melting point for solids for determining sample characteristics. The Bausch & Lomb Abbe Refractometer includes a very solid base with internal optics and lighting, a 2X eyepiece to observe the prisms and a smooth, precise compensator dial to precisely adjust the split images when making a measurement.
The sample is place on an illuminating prism which is easily exposed for cleaning and placing the liquid on the prism. Brief instructions are included. A separate external lamp attached to the refractometer can be adjusted for optimum brightness of the sample. This one also has three standard hose couplings for circulating water or sample in the sampling region.

Easy 3-step operation: (1) Load the sample (as little as 0.03mL for liquid analyses). A positive-locking clip assembly ensures proper prism-sample contact. (2) Light the built-in illuminator. It swings easily into position above or below the prism interface. A Lucite lens ensures even diffusion. (3) Read the results directly in the refractive index, and % dissolved solids from the illuminated scale.
An adjustment knob makes micrometer precise adjustments when setting the dividing line. An Allen wrench is included for calibration. The unit is sealed to prevent accidental spilling and is designed for easy cleaning and servicing.
